The Book of the Dead
Tue, 10/28/08 4:46 PM

I am re-reading the book Hadassah by Tommy Tinney. I love the story of Esther in the Bible, but I also love this book and how the actual going-ons of life and the history of the era are used to kind of, fill in the blanks so to speak for the rest of the story that is not wrote about in the Bible. I really like stories similar to this that focus on the lives of the strong women of the Bible, because I consider myself to be a strong, young woman and it encourages me to read the stories and know that I too can move my 'mountains', face my fears, and pursue my own dreams if only I learn to lean on the strength of the Lord to get me through.

Tue, 10/7/08 5:48 PM

I just began reading Afghanistan, My Tears by David Leatherberry with Bob Abbott. This book is about a Christian husband and wife team who felt called by God to live among the Afghans. They went over in 1976 and lived there for 25 years. During that time, they witnessed the Saur Revolution in 1978 and the Russian invasion in 1979. Despite all the danger, they continued to be faithful to God's calling. They developed a deep affection for their friends in Afghanistan. I chose this book because I want to try to understand how life is in that country and to see it through Christians' eyes. It will also help me to know, in a sense, what lies ahead for our troops who are being deployed to Afghanistan. I pray for God's guidance and protection for them. - Your Friend in Christ, Katy

Tue, 10/7/08 10:49 AM

Mark, on the lighter side, I've been reading a lot of music notes and music! But, I guess that is not what you are asking! I tend to have many books all going at the same time, and read a little to trigger my thinking, or take time to ponder about a portion of the book. So, here goes... At the first of this year I started the journal Experiencing God and also the book by Henry Blackaby. The journal has been very helpful, and I've recently camped out on a statement in the book on p. 104 - "The pattern in the scripture is that we submit ourselves to God and we wait until God shows us what He is about to do, or we watch to see what God is doing around us and join Him." Other books in this 'yearly reading' stack are He is Real by Millie Stamm, Come Away My Beloved by Frances Roberts, and My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers. A few months ago, I read The Shack (on your recommendation) and I received The Traveler's Gift by Andy Andrews as a birthday gift; both books were great and helpful. I'm still thinking about them and will reread. Then, I have a stack going which includes: What's so Amazing about Grace? by Philip Yancey, The Divine Romance by Gene Edwards, Fix Your Eyes on Jesus by Anne Ortlund. I Saw the Lord by Anne Graham Lotz, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, With Your Own Two Hands by Seymour Bernstein, Lightposts for Living by Thomas Kinkade, My Heart's Desire by David Jeremiah, Developing the Leader Within You by John Maxwell, Traveling Light by Max Lucado, Echoes from the Summit by Paul Schullery, Prague Counterpoint by Bodie Thoene (Zion Covenant Series), The Canadian West Series by Janette Oke, God is Never Late by Stan Toler, The Passion of Jesus Christ by John Piper, Secure in the Everlasting Arms by Elizabeth Elliot, Songs of my Soul by Phillip Keller, Dare to Journey with Henri Nouwen by Charles Ringma, Seize the Day with Dietrich Bonhoeffer by Charles Ringma and some quilting and recipe books. I have a lot of books and will pull various ones out for the 'stack' with whatever is going on in my life. The words are food for thought and a person can also feel a kinship with the author as they identify with what is said. I check your Web site to see if you have written anything as your 'essays' and rambling paragraphs have the same effect for me as these books. - Roxanne Adrian, K.C., KS

Three books at once! Currently, I am reading The Longing by Beverly Lewis, The Atonement Child by Francine Rivers and Of Men and Angels by Brock and Bodie Thoene. I do have to be honest, however, and disclose that I have listed these books in order of importance (of finishing first). I enjoy reading a variety of books, and mainly books, whether fact or fiction, that cause me to think while reading. In other words, not just a read-through book!

Growing in Wisdom and Faith It's one of the 'Woman
after God's own Heart' Bible study series by Elizabeth
George. This one is a study on the book of James and the first lesson is to count all trials as joy as it produces patience/perseverance/endurance which leads to greater
Christian faith and maturity. Easier said than done in
the face of some of the trials. 'Lo, I am with you always'
is the verse I cling to. - God bless, Lois

I'm reading The Shack but I don't know why! I don't know what all the fuss is about. It doesn't answer any of life's deepest questions with new insights, nor does it 'open up my soul' like the jacket claims, nor does it compare to Pilgrim's Progress. And, most of all, finding out God is remarkably like Aunt Jemima does nothing
for me. I don't get it. But maybe it's just me.

covers about any topic that can confront a family and

I have recently read C.S. Lewis' sci-fi trilogy, including: Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra and That Hideous Strength. I especially liked Perelandra, as it is a very interesting take on the Garden of Eden. My youth pastor says, That if God did ever create life on other planets, this is how he would do it. A fascinating book called Hurtling Toward Oblivion by Dr. Richard Swenson. Instead of being just another book on end times, it is a logical argument for the end of our age. It is disturbing and sobering in that Dr. Swenson shows that the world is probably coming to an end soon, yet hopeful in that those who trust in Jesus Christ should never despair but live ready for the end.

I've been reading the books by Walter Lord about
the Titanic: A Night to Remember and The Night Lives On.
I actually kind of stumbled across them. I was looking
for videos on YouTube on the Titanic, and I came
across some clips from the movie Night to Remember.
It looked interesting but, when I got to the library, it
had already been taken out. So, I got the books that the
movie was based on instead. They're both very interesting
and take you on board the Titanic, and you see the
whole disaster from the perspective of the survivors
and all the research Walter Lord did on it. Most people
think of the Titanic being 'unlucky' but one thing I
learned is that they were speeding through that
ice-infested area for two hours before the collision but,
'somehow', they managed to get that far without being
hit. God definitely had a hand in that and in the rescue
ship getting through the ice to the lifeboats. It really
shows that, no matter how much of a disaster
something seems, God always has a hand in
turning it around. - Sarah W, Plymouth, NH
