Cali, short for Calico, was a spunky but sweet cat. The first day she came to live with me, she jumped off the railing and landed one story down. I feared she had died but, luckily, cats are resilient. Everyone around her had to be careful with whatever they were doing because she watched every movement. One night, we set up a new keg of beer and a full bottle of co2. The beer was then drawn from the tap on the wall by the bar sink to be sure it worked. I don't drink beer but it was ready to go. The next morning we went downstairs and smelled beer. It didn't take long to see that the tap had been opened and all the beer and co2 had been completely drained. Actually, it all went down the drain, literally. We knew who did it! Cali loved to find ways to climb up into the ceiling in the basement. The tiles couldn't support her weight and she'd fall to the floor. She loved it as she did it over and over again until we figured out her pathway to that ceiling. She also loved to push my books off the railing/bookshelves and onto the stairs. She'd run to the top of the stairs, watch the books slide down, and then do it again. She would to ask me to pick her up when The Lawrence Welk Show was on TV because she loved to 'dance' to the slower music. I taught her how to play a bit aggressively with me but there were rules that she had to follow. We would bat at each other and she'd try to bite me but that wasn't allowed. She learned when to play and when to stop. I don't know which was harder. teaching her tricks that I thought of or stopping her from continuing the tricks she made up. Cats really are wonderful pets, although some dog owners may beg to differ. They can be trained and they can be cuddly but there is always a bit of the wild in them that can't be tamed. Sometimes they're predictable, sometimes not. The most amazing thing I saw was when a family member was in severe pain due to back problems. Cali went over to that person and stayed there to offer comfort. Before long, she started to cry with tears rolling down her little face. I never knew that cats would do that. I could write a book about her and my love for cats. I admit though that I like dogs, too. I hope that one day I'll be able to volunteer to train either search and rescue dogs or dogs that help people who have medical conditions (stroke patients, for example). - Your Sister in Christ, Katy

My furbabies! I have three dogs. The oldest is a German Shepherd named Lucky who is 14 and a half years old. It breaks my heart that I sometimes have to help him stand up. My other two dogs are litter mates, two and a half years old, named Kit and Nick. They are half Schnauzer and half Bichon Frise. What one of those little boys doesn't think of, the other one does! - Eldonna

Yes, I have one Doberman named Molly. I also have three cats that I have adopted. All my pets are spoiled rotten.

Pets went with the kids when they married. Maggie the hamster keeps getting out of her cage, ending up in Crystal's room, who proceeds to wake the neighbors as Maggie scrambles around on her bed in the dark. Black cat named Bama has learned to untie shoes. If only they could teach him to tie them back. - Barbara Fouquet

I currently have a Golden Retriever named 'Charlie'. He's probably about nine years old now. I say probably because a friend's niece found him in her yard over seven years ago without ID and nobody claimed him. I had lost my other two dogs within a year and a half of each other and it had only been a few months since one of my dogs had died. (I had Max and Buddy together for over 12 years.) I had told my friend I really wanted another Retriever but planned to go to a local shelter and adopt. I say God sent Charlie to me. He has a special need being that he is petrified of thunderstorms and fireworks. I have to give him Valium as needed. He had also been mistreated because he was very fearful and 'hand shy'. It took him two weeks to even play (very unusual for Golden Retrievers) and then he'd carry around my 'beanies'. The vet said some Retrievers have to have something in their mouths a lot so now he has a basket full of squeaky toys. My previous dogs didn't do this so this was new to me. He is such a great companion and guard dog. He usually only sleeps on my bed in the winter but, this past August, he slept on my bed the first night my nephew moved in (while he's going to college here). I think he was protecting me. He's great friends with my neighbor's dog and they dog-sit him when I'm gone or if a thunderstorm is predicted and I'm going to work (I work nights). He's a great friend! - Cherie D., Kalamazoo, MI

Yes, I have four cats.

I have two black Labs. The perfect one is Nikki and I think she is six years old. The other is Heidi and she is a canine Mark! Hyper... hyper...hyper! I've tried Prozac and that didn't help. She is super sweet, needs tons of attention that I can't give her as I work all day and I have a two year old to care for. Pray for me.......thanks. I also have two cats, Holly and Molly. They are 14 and 13 years old and wonderful!

Yes. Two Maltese dogs and a black mouth Cur. The male Maltese is Trey and the female Maltese is Celeste. They are brother and sister from different litters. Trey is six years old and Celeste is five years old. They love to travel with us everywhere, especially in our 'house mobile' (RV)! Chance is the one-year-old cur. We found him in our barn. Needless to say, he is the juvenile delinquent but we love him anyway! I keep waiting for the day when he outgrows his 'puppy days'!

I have a ten-year-old golden retriever named Chloie who is very sweet and lovable. She's best friends with Mittens (a 17-year-old cat) who's been my best friend through a lot of very hard times. He's sick now and has lost ten pounds. I'm afraid he won't be around much longer. I have another cat, Shadow, who's a stray that I've had for three years. She's sweet, too, but she has a very different personality than Mittens. My unique pets are backyard chickens - Molly, Taffy and Coco. I had three more but lost two a while ago to a chicken disease and another, Lacy, died Christmas morning which was very sad. They follow me around and come running to meet me when I come home from work. (My kids never did that!) Coco will sit in my lap and fall asleep. I also have tropical fish and my daughter took the hamster to Florida with her because it was too cold in my house in the winter for her. I love animals and my daughter keeps telling me that she's going to give me a goat because I've always wanted one. I'd like to have more land one day and have rescued farm animals.

Tiffany, we got from the pound 12 years ago and she's the best dog we have ever had. Everyone who meets her loves her. Patches (our cat) was born inside a tree in my mother's backyard. The mom had taken all the kittens out except her. She is now 19 years old and cranky as an old lady (which I guess she is). My husband has said this is it, no more animals but I know he loves them as much as I do ('cause Patches sleeps with him).

I have one dog. (Shh... she doesn't know she is a dog.) Her name is Abbie and she is part chow, part cow dog and purebred spoiled rotten hound. She loves to play 'golf' with her toys, doesn't like for anyone to cry and she is terrified of thunderstorms. - Mariah Newberry, Perryton, TX

I had pets. Long gone now. Chips & Big John (mother and son) were Cocker Spaniel mixes. Big John was such a loyal dog. Both were prone to wander. Big John lost his right front leg from being too lazy to get up and move out of the way of an oncoming car. That never slowed him down and he became the most famous dog in the whole neighborhood. Never let us out of his sight. Cuddles was a black Lab mix. Short for a Lab but, when my oldest sister brought her home, she launched herself onto my mother and started loving all over her. Mom named her on the spot. Big John treated her as his personal responsibility. Cuddles loved Nilla wafers, American cheese, yipped when she slept and her whole body wagged. She loved to leave us 'gifts', especially under dining room chairs and at the end of the garage stairs. She lived 12 years with us, had nine puppies and then went away one day after Christmas to be alone and die. Never was found. Then, we had cats. Toots was the meanest cat but gave us the sweetest cat, Charlie. Both midnight black. Toots ran away but Charlie lived on for 12 years. Charlie was a perpetual purrer. Every time you picked him up, he would purr. He became very anemic and I had to hand-feed him real liver. I can't stand liver myself but was happy to cut it up for him. He would perch himself on the oven handle, next to where I was cutting up the liver, with his mouth open waiting for the next piece. Then, there was Simon. My baby came to me when he was one month old and lived for 15 years. Charlie let him know who was boss. Simon was not a perpetual purrer. He hissed at me when I picked him up but loved to be given his hairball medicine. His last week of life, I came to visit him and, when I called his name, he picked up his head and started purring! Several years after Charlie died, Mom found Honey, a dog, at a nearby Kiwi farm. She was a mix of many types of dogs. Small, blond, Beagle body, Basset Hound legs & Golden Retriever snout. Beautiful dog. Never did figure out what exactly she was but Simon let Honey know who was boss of the house. If Charlie taught Simon one thing, it was how to protect his turf! Honey was Mom's dog & very protective of her, right up to the end. Barked, got between and rarely let anyone near Mom but loved everyone and expected them to love her. Mom became too sick in 2007 to take care of her anymore so my third sister took Honey to her home. Honey had to be put down last year due to cancer. Charlie, Simon & Honey all died of forms of cancer. Well-loved animals all. All well missed.

I have one dog (Princess Chevy). She is a 14-year-old hyper Toy American Eskimo with no teeth. She loves anyone and loves to give kisses. Last year, she went through two surgeries because of a Heart Murmur. With a lot of praying, she got through the surgery. Princess is now going strong. There might be another surgery to remove another tumor though. God is great! - Patty Candela

I am a dog lover, allergic to cats. I no longer have a dog, he died about a year ago. I had him for ten years. I had a Schipperke, belgium breed. His name was Waggles. Schipperkes have no tails and the breed is generally all black. Waggles was all black and, to look at him, he looked like a fox in the face. He was very cute and very smart. I guess you could say he was a medium-size dog, about 22 pounds. He got his name from the previous owner because, whenever he saw his owners, his whole body would wiggle. He was very sweet and always happy. - Vickie Gibson, MI

Kristen and I have two cats, Wolfie (yellow tabby) and Serafina (black and white). Wolfie is more like a dog. When you throw something, he will bring it back about four out of six times. Serafina is a princess, her nickname is 'Miss Lard Butt' (please forgive me if that is not appropriate). We also have a Cockatiel. She is gray and white with orange cheeks. She loves corn on the cob (we hold the cob for her). Thanks for asking. - Linda Lee Smith 'Grizz'
Tue, 5/26/09 10:40 AM
I had a dog named Brandy once but I rarely talk about her because she passed away about 23 years ago. She was like one of the family and sometimes it still hurts to talk about it. I am a believer in the fact that I will see her again someday though. After all, God has a place for everything in Heaven, even animals.
Tue, 5/26/09 9:40 AM
I have a Standard Dachshund, who thinks she's a mini (LOL, don't we all?), a Miniature Dachshund who thinks she's a Great Dane and a Yorkie who gets bossed by the Dachshunds and our four cats.

Yes, I am a devoted cat lover of six (which, put in proper thought, they all add up to one big dog). My family of cats starting with the oldest... Purrkey (born 1996). When he purrs, it sounds like the old-fashioned coffee pot. Boots and Pumpkin (born 2002). Boots would look like a panther if he didn't have a white streak going down from his throat but, for a 20-pound cat, he is a sissy with a tiny meow. Sassey (born 2004) is almost a pure Russian Blue, plus you can just see him thinking. That gets him in trouble. Most of the time, all I have to do is take a pill bottle that rattles and he knows he is in trouble. Wuzzy and Fuzzy (born 6-5-2004) had to be bottlefed. Everybody but Purrkey is related.

We have a crazy German Shepherd named Glory, who acts like she will eat strangers who come to the door (she won't). Then, she'll lay on the floor and let the baby crawl all over her and chew on her ears. We have a cat named Mr. Snerdley, compliments of my husband, who we call Kitty, so as not to embarrass him. He likes to sleep in the beds with the kids but does draw the line at letting the baby crawl on him. - Erin

We have two Boxers. Both are rescue dogs. The big boy is Reggit. His name took a lot of thought and weirdness. When we first got him, he bounced like Tigger. He is what they call a reverse brindle color. He is more black than tan. Therefore, we named him Tigger but reversed it. Reggit. He is hyperactive, so.... we should have named him 'Mark'. The girl is China. She is white and not deaf. Her name is from her color and because I believe that some day she will dig to China. Dogs are truly a gift of God.

Yes, I have five pets: They are my husband and my four kids. They are 26 years old, six years old, five years old, four years old and eight months old.

I have three cats of my own. Then, when my mom passed away, I took her cat. So, now, I have four cats, which is really too many. But I love them all and wouldn't take anything in the world for them. They are a bunch of clowns and provide me with lots of entertainment, and they were also good therapists when my mom died. I like dogs, too. I just happen to end up with cats all the time. I think the stray cats in my area have put the word out on the street that all you have to do is show up on my back porch and hold your paw up like you're injured, and I will feed you and take you in!
Sat, 5/23/09 9:24 AM
Yes I do. I have two cats. I think I read somewhere that you don't like cats and that's okay. If I'm wrong, forgive me. Anyway, these two cats came from a barn in a small town near here about six years ago. They are sisters. I think they are in the Ragdoll (breed) family. They are beautiful, very loving and playful. My son has a dog. He is a Border Collie/Siberian Husky mix. He likes to herd things (me). He's very smart and really needs to be on farm somewhere herding livestock. He had a couple of deformities. We had them fixed and we love him still. My son also has a fish. This fish is about three years old. He killed off all of the other fish my son had in the tank but, yet, he lives on.

I have a black lab that was originally trained to help the handicapped and those with Alzheimer's Disease. Unfortunately, he could not pass the courses. They said he wasn't smart enough. I work at a nursing home and he visits the residents and everything he was trained to do, he does with them. I think he just choked when being tested. His name is Franklin and he is very intelligent and gentle. You just can't feed him human food. It makes him irritable. Probably does humans, too, but who can tell? I love him and Bo and Stanley, too! We need to see more of your boys, Mark! - Mary Lynn from St. Louis

I have two cats, Winnie and Lulu. I'd always had dogs but I'm glad these two cats found their way to my house! All my pets have been 'homeless' and they've all been great pets.

We have two Guinea Pigs named Mutt & Jeff. They are funny when they are telling you all their problems. They sure can tell some whoppers, too. Then we have 2 cats -a Siamese named Sassy (lives up to her name, too) and an Ocicat named Dutchess. They follow Jackie all over the house. They really fuss at her when she goes in the office/her craft room and shuts the door. She locks them out because Sassy has to be right in the middle of what she's doing - very helpful! The only time they really fuss at Gene is when it's time to eat. Then Sassy lets Dutchess be the spokesperson. Maybe it's because Dutchess is the older of the two. One day, we were painting the dining room and we had our ladder up by the wall and had just got down to check something. Well, Miss Sassy, being the great helper she is, climbs up the ladder all the way to the top and proceeds to stand up on the wall we had just painted. Of course, when we hollered at her, down off the ladder she goes and on to the carpet with wet front paws! Luckily for her, we managed to get the paw prints off the carpet right away. Another time she was very helpful was when we were putting indoor/outdoor carpet on the front porch. The front door came open and Sassy comes out to investigate and jumps where the wet glue was. Needless to say, that cost her a 'paws' bath while we tried to get the glue off her paws so it wouldn't make her sick. Well, I've saved the best for last. We have two dogs. Piglet is a Miniature Sharpei. She has travelled with us in the motorhome to Tulsa and to Branson to see Mark. That trip cost us a bunch of money. We didn't take her kennel with us because we thought she would be okay. Piglet got bored and chewed a corner off our leather couch cushion, then started on the driver's seat and peed on Gene's side of the bed not once but twice! (She is technically Gene's dog - guess she got mad at him) Did I mention that the motorhome was brand new? First trip out! It was approximately $2,500 for repairs to the cushion and driver's seat. Gene went out the very next day to Wal-Mart and bought the little miss a kennel. She only went in it when we both left. Our newest member is a one-year-old (8 weeks when we got her) Bassett Hound named Lady Flash. We named her Lady and our son added the Flash because of the sheriff's dog on Dukes of Hazzard was named Flash so, therefore, all Bassetts should be Flash. Speed has nothing to do with her name by any means. This little gal with her looonnnggg ears and super sad eyes has literally chewed our porch (among other things) to pieces. We had a pretty back porch with a trellis on it for shade and flowers. Lady didn't like it and tore it off board by board until it looked so tacky Gene had to tear it down. Piglet didn't chew on things like that until we got Lady. Now, they both are chewing us out of house and home. We dearly love our four girls and two boys. The cats and Piglet have travelled with us in the motorhome a couple of times. We haven't tried Lady yet and, to be honest, we're scared to! There are days that these critters keep us in stitches and make our days so we can get through to the next one. But I really think God needs to talk to the pups about their behaviour problem. Seriously, we couldn't live without our critters (our kids). Our life would very dull and incomplete. - Jackie and Gene Bell, Safford, AZ

Hi Mark. Yes, I do have one pet. Her name is Gobblin and she is almost 12 years old. She is a short black female cat. She is an indoor animal and is very smart. She is my baby. She is well behaved and I love her. She has been in the King County Journal newspaper. She is very spoiled, fun-loving, loves to cuddle, likes dogs, loves to play and she knows when something is wrong with me. When I am not feeling well, she takes really good care me. We take care of each other. I would be lost without her. She is the very first cat that I have ever had. We spend time together with God each and, every day, we pray together. She has been a blessing from God. I raised her well. - Brenda J. Thompson, Federal Way, WA

I do not have any pets. I don't like animals enough to
have one as a pet.
Thu, 5/21/09 12:18 PM
I have a cat whose fur is particularly silky. She is black, her
name is Missy and she would not eat your dogs. At the moment, she is lying on her back spread-eagled in front of the fire. If she were not asleep, she would be walking over my keyboard. Missy's biggest fear is balloons. - Mezzi

Once upon a time, in the land of Virginia, Nala was born. The year was 1998 when God put this beautiful black and silver Siberian Husky into our lives. At first, Nala lived with our daughter and her family in a small two bedroom apartment until the apartment came to be an uncomfortable cage for a healthy, very active, growing puppy. During a visit with my daughter in 2000 (we live in central NY), we all decided that it would be the best thing for Nala to bring her home with us to live out her days in the country... to roam and to romp and to play. Eleven years later, she is still very happy and healthy and, though her energy level has slowed, she loves to play catch with her people who she loves very much. Nala is very affectionate to her people and yet very protective of us. This causes her to be unkind to strangers who come into her domain. She is a faithful friend and companion and has been a pure joy to us.

I have a Boxer named Chato. He has big brown eyes and loves
to play. When I take him for a walk, he drags me along. Very hyper. I got him when he was just six weeks old. He was being taken to the pound. He's six months old now and almost three feet tall. I feel safe when I'm home alone with him. If anyone ever tried to break in, he'd jump on them and lick them to death. He brings a lot of love to our house. We have to keep him away from trees. He likes to tear the bark off, dig a hole and bury it. - Teresa

I have three dogs. Their names are Cuddles (age 11), Pepper (8)
and China Rose (7). Cuddles and China Rose are Shih Tzus
and
Pepper is part Shih Tzu and some other kind of dog. Pepper is our hyper dog. He got into baker's chocolate and had to get his stomach pumped when he was a puppy. He will still get into our food if we leave food out when we go out. Cuddles is a fairly laidback dog. Kids can do anything to him and he does not do anything. He is our goat; he has eaten the sole out of a slipper and he will eat anything. China Rose is our sweetheart. - Jeanette

I currently have a dog (inherited from my daughter). Zeus is a Great Dane/Black and Tan mix. He is very gentle and mild-mannered. Thank goodness! I also have four cats -Whisper, Bessie, Smudge and Sweet Pea and two cockatiels - Gus and Max. I had to have my Dalmatian (Toby) put down recently. He was my buddy for 13 years. I do miss him. I have always had pets. They are the best friends a person could have - loyal, always forgiving and great companions. - Linda S.

Yes. I have a dog which we adopted from the Humane Society. They were about to put him down and he was only a puppy. His name is Spirit and he's a Lab mix. He lives up to him name. - Barb from Flint, MI

I used to have a black and white Cockapoo (part Cocker Spaniel and Poodle). I had him for nine years when I accidentally locked him out after my daughter Lisa (who was three at the time) and I went to McDonalds. I heard 'Beezer' whining at the door to get in (I thought he was in the bedroom) and I told him no. It was later on that I discovered he was outside the back door of the apartment. I searched for a year to find him and I even had people tell me they saw him and I should have been ashamed of how long his hair was. They didn't bother to try and catch him but they were very glad to tell me how bad he needed a hair cut. Lisa and I moved from Dallas, TX, to New Orleans and we had a friend in Texas who was still looking for him. We never did get our beloved Beezer back but God made sure that I would spot a dog that looked just like him every time we moved. When we moved from Dallas to New Orleans, there were two dogs that lived at the end of our street. When we moved from New Orleans to Merritt Island, FL, there was a dog that lived on the fifth floor of a condo. We were watching this older woman and the dog coming off the elevator, he stopped at the condo and the older woman just kept walking. We could imagine him looking at his master trying to tell her that he was tired and wanted to go into the house where was she going. Lisa and I agreed that the older woman needed Beezer more than we did and God must have sent him to her and wanted to let us know that he was okay. I met the woman a few years ago and she was very happy with that dog. I still miss my Beezer he was like my first child. He would have been 33 years old now. My, how time flies. - Laura Cranford, Merritt Island, FL

I have a gray and white cat named Vestal. She is the
queen of the house.
Tue, 5/19/09 4:47 PM
I have an 11-year-old Golden Retriever named Abbigail. She is a tad overweight like her father but has a much better disposition. We have a seven-year-old White German Shepherd named Rerun. She is Daddy's girl. She will sit outside or in the bay window and watch for him to pull in the driveway. When my Dad was terminal, Rerun wouldn't leave his side. She followed him everywhere he went and even stayed right by his side when he sat on the porch listening to music. Emma is a Boxer Lab who looks like a mid-sized Lab with a square head. She is nine years old and is my mom's dog. They both live with us. Then there is Coby. What can I say about Coby? He is a Pug that was bought for my niece who was homesick when they moved here from Massachusetts. A week later, she found a boy and Coby became the property of my sister, who denies him, but loves him anyway. They also live with us. We have a cat who can't hear. Most white cats with blue eyes can't. Her name is Buzz, named by my great-nephew when he was into Toy Story. And, finally, my great-niece has two gerbils named Coco and Whiskers. Mostly, they just make noise running around their giant wheel that they only run on during the night. Our house is a zoo but it's not just the animals. Abby and Rerun belong to Rod and I and we love them dearly. They are great dogs. - Kate Dunavant

I had a dog named Sherlock when my dad was in the Army. He used to go with my dad to his communications site. Sherlock would bark at the guard saying, "Open the gate." Then, when dad drove through, Sherlock would bark again saying, "Close the gate." Then, he would patrol the site several times throughout the day. Sherlock looked a lot like Benji. He was part Poodle and part Dachshund. He wasn't real big and he didn't shed which was very nice since we moved every couple of years. He's been gone for over 20 years but I still miss him. He was the best.

I live with my sister and her husband and they have a Jack Russell Terrier. I can't stand to be around him so, when he starts to get on my nerves, I go in my room and shut the door. I have no patience around pets anymore so, for me, it's best not to even have one.
Mon, 5/18/09 11:01 PM
I thank God every single day for dogs. My family has three - one purebred Lab named Nikki, one Lab mix named Bruno and one Pomeranian named Prissy (and is she ever!). We also have a Conure (a bird, basically a miniature parrot) named Reuben. His middle name is Schroeder, after the Peanuts comic strip character, because he loves to sing along when I play Beethoven on the piano. However, when I play Bach, he squawks in protest. He loves it when we sing out of the hymnal! Bruno also likes to sing but only when my sister plays the violin. He even sings on pitch! - Mary Jean

Yes, I have pets. My mom says that they are my brothers and sisters. We have two small dogs, ten cats (one which lives in my room because the other cats don't like her) and a goldfish we call 'Fat Fish'. We believe that cats, at least ours, are Christians because, when we go to read the Bible, a few cats jump up and lay right on the Bible. Mom thinks that the cats are reading the Bible through osmosis. Dogs, on the other hand, are heathens.

We have two cats, Claire and Audrey. They're twin sisters about eight months old. We got them at the animal shelter at the beginning of the month. The shelter called them brown tiger cats because they have stripes like a tiger. I never liked cats very much but I love these two. We've only had them a little over two weeks but, already, I couldn't imagine not having them. I took them to get their shots after we got them and I couldn't watch. It was as bad as watching my kids get a shot. It's a good thing I'm not in a health profession. - Renee

I have three cats. My cat Snuggles is a Siamese and is the daddy of the other two, Khalon, a boy (Kay-Lon) and AJ (a girl, stands for Angel Junior, after her mother). Khalon had a miracle when he was a kitten. He went blind in his left eye, causing my niece to cry. I prayed and the Lord healed it - completely. There are witnesses. He has two perfect eyes to this day to the glory of God. (and, yes, I'm Charismatic and have angelic support). May the Lord continue to watch over you and bless you as you bless so many others in your ministry.

I last had five guinea pigs. I've had guinea pigs most of my life and they are the most incredible creatures.

Yes, I have four cats. Three indoor kitties, Brightspot, T.L.T.(Too Long Tail) and M.& M. (Muffin Maker). The outdoor kitty is named Bob. (The cats would all be indoor/outdoor kitties but Bob doesn't play well with others.) My son also has a large Redtail Boa - not exactly my pet but it lives here, too. 'Snake' is its name. (Not a great name but we couldn't think of anything better.) Snake is a good snake for a snake - it hasn't bitten or constricted me so I'm happy. It's also the only pet in the house that we actually sought out and bought. The rest of this group were thrust upon us. (Some people have greatness thrust upon them, we have cats.) Brightspot was the first. My Aunt and Uncle asked us to take her. It seems that this cat had been hit by a car and nursed back to health twice by their daughter/my cousin and they were afraid that the cat would run out of lives if it continued to live with them. So, my husband and I decided to take her in. She is a very sweet kitty and a great little huntress even if she is up there in years. T.L.T. is our little dumpster cat. One of the neighbor kids found a little, skinny cat in the dumpster at the local gas station so they took the cat home and, of course, their parents didn't allow them to keep it. I'm not sure who thought it would be a great idea to put the yowling animal in front of my house but someone did. That cat was so desperate that I had to take him in. T.L.T. was very skinny and needy when we took him in. He grew into a sweet cat but he has 'abandonment issues'. T.L.T. is the only cat I have that not only follows me everywhere but he also licks me until I throw him down. (If he thinks I don't mean it, he immediately jumps up again). As if that isn't enough, this poor cat has thinning fur on the top of his head. I didn't notice this until my husband and son pointed it out to me. They say he looks like a bald, old man and I guess he does, poor kitty. The next cat we couldn't say no to was abandoned at the Post Office. She ran to us and seemed to beg us to take her home. We did and we named her M&M. Cat number four showed up at our house and behaved as if he owned the place. He is very mellow and sweet to people but tries his best to rip other cats to pieces. Bob is an American Bobtail and he's a pretty good watchdog. He patrols the grounds like clockwork but Bob is not that bright. When Bob sees one of the cats by the sliding glass door, he runs as fast as he can and slams into the door. Not once or twice but over and over again. The indoor cats are entertained by his antics. They watch Bob for as long as he wishes to bash his head. Poor kitty.

Yes, I have a dog and a cat. My dog looks like a Cocker Spaniel but has some Border Collie in her. She thinks she has to defend the whole neighborhood and barks a lot. However, our block has never had any break-ins or crime, so maybe she does help. Her name is Scoobie but, over the years, her name has evolved to Scoobers. I'm not sure why. My cat was dodging traffic one day by my school and I took him home just for the night until someone else could arrange to take him. But he knew right away that he had come home, so that was that. His name is Tigger and he has the striped tail and coloring of Tigger in Winnie the Pooh. Both of my pets are spoiled to death but at least they aren't eating out of crystal bowls - yet!

I have a Shih Tzu and a cat. I used to have guinea pigs but that didn't turn out too well for them with the cat... Oops.

One cat named Kitty Ann Marie Roberts. Her full name is used only when she has been naughty. My daughter named her this when she ran outside and would not come back in. She is normally referred to as 'Kitty'. She has been with us for almost ten years and, some days, she is the only thing that keeps me sane. She meets me at the door when I get home and is so happy to see me. She asks so little and give so much love. There is such a wonderful peaceful feeling late at night when Kitty is on the pillow beside me purring her little heart out. After a long crazy day at work, that is one of life's most relaxing, comforting sounds. She was a Christmas gift to my daughter but, when she went to Texas A & M for college, she left her with me and, upon graduating from A & M, she got married and still left her with me. Kitty is afraid of my daughter and her husband - something to do with many unappreciated baths and teenage torture that only my daughter has forgotten. Needless to say, anytime my daughter comes for a visit, Kitty runs and hides until the coast is clear. She seems to be afraid of any and all men so my son-in-law (who happens to be 6'8") really scares her. I am so grateful that my daughter left her with me. It was very difficult for me when my daughter first moved to college. She had been all I had for 18 years and living alone suddenly was quiet and lonely. Knowing that Kitty is there the minute I open the door really helps. Animals are a great gift from God and I am very grateful that I have her in my life. - Margaret Roberts, Madisonville, TX

I have two dogs who are my kids. My girl is a Chihuahua-Maltese mix named Suzie, who is between seven and eight years old. She was a rescue from a breeder friend of my niece, who also raises Chihuahuas. I've had her for two and a half years. She is so sweet and always wants to cuddle! My other one is a male Bichon named Boogie, short for Booger, who will be three in July. I got him about a year and a half ago from an older couple who couldn't care for him any more and they gave him the name but he lives up to it! He has serious ADHD and is extremely hard-headed but I love him anyway. They are big fans of yours, too! As Tony said in the video a few weeks ago, your dogs rule your house, mine rule my house, too! Give your dogs hugs and cuddles from me! - Karen Elrod, Memphis, TN

Yes, I do. I have two fish. A sucker fish, Brock, and a
Jack
Dympsy, Jackie-Jewles Dymsy (J.J.). I also have a male cockatiel. His name is Max and he's nine years old. He doesn't like to be petted. He's gray white and has a yellow face with orange cheeks. He hollers but he also whistles and talks, too (when he feels likes it). Since he got his wings clipped, it's safe to have him out. He'll try to fly but lands on the floor and starts hollering. I think he likes Mom more than me. I also have two puppies, Lab mixes, Sadie and Ladie. Well, to be honest, it's just sort've, since they really belong to Mee-maw, Great-Auntie Rosie, and Karen (my cousin.) But I do go over to their house sometimes and the girls get really excited. They're jealous of each other. They fight and wrestle with each other. Mom's saying Sadie might have some Chow in her, since she saw a black spot on her tongue. Ladie is bigger than Sadie. They like to lick you in the face and on the neck. Ladie likes to bite ears and you have to be careful if you're eating; Ladie will jump up and get the food. When Sadie wants to come back inside (with Ladie), she'll stand on her hind legs and bang on the screen door with her paws. She's even taken her paw to move the curtain on the window to look outside. - Audrey Nelson

My last pet died of congestive heart failure at 11 years of age in April. He was a dwarf black rabbit, was litter trained and had the run of the place. He loved to be chased, he'd lick your face like a dog and he was always jumping on furniture until he got too old. I had worked 10 years at a vet clinic as an animal caretaker and found homes for dumped animals who folks left and never came back for. One of them being a dog I kept. I've had two dogs, two hamsters, two rabbits (30 yr span) until they died of old age. - DN, Champaign, IL

I feed four 'wild' cats that come every day to the house so they won't starve. One I named 'Jody'. He has been with us 12 years but we still can't pet him. We have three inside cats, two of which were abandoned by a neighbor whose house went into foreclosure. I couldn't stand to see something happen to them. I've always loved animals - dogs and cats - but God seemed to put all these abandoned animals into my yard and heart. My Mom always said that God puts an 'X' on the house that will help animals so that they know where to go. I think I remember you saying that your dogs elected you to be their provider! See, Mom's are often right!
